Kherson, a city in occupied Ukraine, is under the control of a pro-Russian military administration, which has announced plans to organize a vote on Russian annexation.

According to NAN, Kirill Stremoussov, the deputy head of Kherson’s military and civil administration, made the statement in a video posted to Telegram.

Yes, we are getting ready to organize a referendum, Stremoussov stated.

Kherson should join Russia as a full member, he continued.

It is not a recent development that such a referendum might be held in the southern Ukrainian area, and prior statements made by the Moscow-imposed government suggested it might happen in the fall.

Igor Kolychaev, the elected mayor of Kherson, had reportedly been taken into prison by Russian authorities, according to reports that surfaced on Tuesday.

The government of Ukraine has long anticipated that a referendum like this one, modeled after the annexation of Crimea and the rebel areas of Luhansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, may be planned for Kherson.

Since the beginning of March, Kherson, a significant Black Sea port, has been completely under Russian hands.
