Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has named Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City as the player who should win the Ballon d’Or award in 2022.

Many football commentators and fans believe Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema is the most worthy winner after a tremendous season with both club and country, and Van Gaal’s pick pits him against them.

Van Gaal stated in a pre-match press conference with Then24 that De Bruyne is the Best Player this season.

“He is the Player of the Year for me,” he remarked. What is the Ballon d’Or [Golden Ball]? Yes, that’s what I’m talking about.”

“However, as a midfielder, he will not be chosen immediately,” he continued.

De Bruyne led Man City to the Premier League title in 2021-22.

Belgium’s midfielder scored 19 goals in his career.
