In the midst of the club’s financial difficulties, FC Barcelona is reportedly in talks to bring the team’s best player, Lionel Messi, back.
In addition to having to cleanse their name from accusations that they bought referees during Lionel Messi’s time at the club, FC Barcelona is still struggling to balance its books.
Recall that the club’s football academy produced Lionel Messi. He joined the team as a teenager and later developed into the greatest player in the organization.
In Barcelona, Messi earned a record six Ballon d’Or awards and finished his career as the team’s all-time leading scorer with 672 goals in 778 games. He contributed to the club’s four Champions League and ten La Liga championships.
Messi departed the club in tears even though he had unmatched stats and accomplishments there when the Spanish giants were unable to extend his contract in 2021 due to financial issues.
The 35-year-old Argentine football legend who last year assisted his nation in winning the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later signed a record-breaking contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The agreement, which has a one-year extension option, will expire this summer.
According to recent rumors, PSG is considering letting Messi leave the team after his contract expires in order to save money on its over €700,000-per-week pay bill. Initially, there were indications that PSG was attempting to extend the agreement.
Rafael Yuste, a vice president at FC Barcelona who was there when Lionel Messi departed in 2021, was reportedly quoted as saying on Friday that the club has spoken to the current world champion.
He said, “I participated in the negotiations (in 2021) which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result.
“I’ve always had this thorn in my side that Leo couldn’t continue at our club.
“Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We’re in contact, of course, with them.”
