Nollywood’s year has started off well, especially after a year of mind-blowing, brilliant, and wildly profitable movies and television shows. The year 2023 is off to an amazing start for viewers, actors, and other stakeholders in the film industry thanks to that success.

Throughout it all, it’s crucial to recognize the enormous influence that streaming services have had on the Nigerian film industry. By doing so, we are reminded of how the streaming services have made it possible for performers and filmmakers to reach a bigger audience while experiencing less stress.

The Nollywood industry has long been supplied by Showmax, one of the most well-known platforms in this area. This year doesn’t appear to be any different as we have a list of shows that are scheduled to premiere this month.

This week on WN Picks, we’ll feature a few of the best Nigerian shows available on Showmax in January.

My Siblings and I S4 – January 9

A 2018 Nigerian comedy series called My Siblings and I is based on the life of the Aberuagba family and shows how, despite their many misunderstandings and fierce confrontations, they are always there for one another out of pure love.

The series shows the bizarre, outrageous, and amusing actions taken by each family member, as well as the friends of the family and the domestic help, while each sibling in the family observes events.

Big Brother Titans – January 15

The Big Brother Titans, a hybrid of the South African and Nigerian reality TV show franchises, have been making headlines for quite some time now, including application warnings among many other things. It has been confirmed that the show will air on Showmax as well as the commencement date.

In this version of Big Brother, players from South Africa and Nigeria will share a home while vying for a cash prize at the end of the program.

Votes will be used as usual to keep housemates in the competition, and evictions will proceed as usual on Big Brother shows.

Wura – January 23

In Wura, the fierce Frontline Gold Mine CEO, loving mother of two, and ideal wife Wura-Amoo Adeleke tells her own experience.

Wura is the quintessential iron lady who doesn’t give a damn whose ox is gored in order to obtain what she wants when it comes to running her business empire. For her family, Wura is a saint with no flaws.

Along with many other Nollywood stalwarts and rising performers, the episodic drama stars Scarlet Gomez as Wura-Amoo Adeleke, Yomi Fash-Lanso as Anthony-Amoo Adeleke, Carol King as Grace Adeleke, Ray Adeka as Jejeloye, and many more.

Yvonne Orji: A Whole Me – January 25

Yvonne Orji, an Emmy-nominated performer, continues where her first special left off by taking the stage once more to provide her take on the pandemic, estate planning, growing up as a child of Nigerian immigrants, and the harsh realities of dating.

Her versatility and sensitivity are highlighted in the comedy special, which also serves as a no-holds-barred therapy session for both the artist and the audience. It combines stand-up comedy with scripted stories in a unique way.

Other non-Nigerian shows

Other highly intriguing non-Nigerian shows are available on Showmax in January in addition to the top Nigerian shows highlighted on WN Picks. Showmax has a ton of shows for January, including “The Last Of Us,” “The First Lady,” “The Cleaning Lady,” “Billions,” and “Flatbush Misdemeanors.”
