Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the US government, has turned food into a weapon in the continuing confrontation with Ukraine.

According to John Kirby, the UD National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, Putin “absolutely has weaponized food.”

However, he did state that the Biden administration is working with partner countries to break an export blockade that is causing a global food shortage.

“It certainly has militarized food – Mr. Putin has weaponized food,” he told CNN.

“Putin’s regime’s export restriction will have a global impact,” he acknowledged.

“Some of that will probably be felt here as well,” he added. “That’s why we’re putting so much effort into figuring out new ways to get some of that grain out.”
