The new captain of France’s national football team is 24-year-old Kylian Mbappe.

Hugo Lloris, who retired following the World Cup final loss to Argentina in Doha last December 2022, will be replaced by Mbappe, a striker who now competes for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

After a dramatic match ended 3-3 after extra time, Tottenham goalie Lloris, 36, announced the end of his international career when Lionel Messi’s Argentina team denied the French team in a penalty shootout to win the World Cup trophy.

According to Naija News, Lloris had been the captain of the France team for more than ten years. As Manchester United center-back Raphael Varane retired following their loss to Argentina in December, Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid was elected vice-captain.

According to AFP, Mbappe agreed to serve as captain after reaching a deal with Didier Deschamps.

The first encounter for Les Bleus since the World Cup final in Qatar will be this Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier at the Stadium de France against the Netherlands.

It may be noted that Mbappe completed a hat trick against Argentina in the world cup final in December. For weeks, the young man’s selection as captain had been in the news.

In 2018, he was a teenager when Les Bleus won the World Cup, and now he is perhaps the top forward in the world.

The Paris-born former Monaco player, who serves as PSG’s vice captain in place of Brazilian defender Marquinhos, captained the team during Sunday’s defeat to Rennes without the defense.

Mbappe has performed admirably for his club. The 24-year-old player led PSG to the round of 16 of the Champions League, where Bayern Munich eliminated them. He has scored 19 goals in 24 Ligue 1 games this season.
