The Independent National Election Commission, INEC, Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has stated that a lawsuit may result from the claim that he rigged the presidential election.

After receiving a resignation request from the PDP leadership on Friday, the electoral chief responded to the party.

The chairman is being investigated by the police and the Directorate of State Services (DSS) for allegedly tampering with election results, according to the opposition.

In a statement, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu’s press secretary, criticized the PDP and urged them to present evidence in court to back up their assertions.

The spokeswoman questioned why the party did not present supporting documentation for “the baseless charges”.

The PDP, according to Oyekanmi, also failed to provide proof of Yakubu’s interference with the uploading and transmission of election results.

The aide claimed that the INEC “does not rig elections”, noting that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, “has protected the integrity of the electoral process”.

Oyekanmi reminded the PDP that it should uphold its honor by persevering with its appeal until a decision is made and that it had rejected the results of the election on February 25.

“Calling for the resignation of the INEC Chairman and canvassing the same grounds the party intends to argue in court on newspaper pages is like putting the wagon before the horse.

“The PDP is hereby reminded that making libelous allegations against the person of the INEC Chairman is actionable,” he added.
