Nigerians living abroad have been exhorted by President Muhammadu Buhari to never forget to support national development.

In a meeting with a few chosen Nigerians on June 29 in Lisbon, Portugal, Buhari made this appeal. He urged them to carry on serving as Nigerian ambassadors by their deeds and conduct.

The president further asked Nigerians abroad to use social media to advance national unity rather than instigate hatred.

On June 30, his media assistant, Garba Shehu, issued the following statement:

“Nigerians in the diaspora have prospered and used their abilities to boost our country’s profile higher, economically, socially, technologically, and culturally. This is true in every sphere of human endeavor, including the creative industries, sports, health, and academia.

In order to facilitate and support your engagement with our nation and achieve a win-win conclusion in our endeavor to keep Nigerians together at home and abroad, this Government established the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

“You must continue to behave as our outward-looking ambassadors by your attitude, deeds, and character. In whatever you do, you must perform at your highest level. You must remember your home while you are here because you are the role model we want to set for the rest of the world.
