President Buhari visits Portugal.

Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria, will fly out of Abuja today on a four-day state visit to Portugal.

This occurs two days after his return from the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda (CHOGM).

Garba Shehu, Buhari’s senior special assistant for media and publicity, confirmed the president’s trip to Portugal today.

Shehu claims that while in Portugal, President Buhari will meet with his counterpart in an official capacity, receive the nation’s highest honor, and be given the “Great Collar of the Order of Prince Henry.”

The two Presidents are anticipated to preside over an expanded bilateral meeting and participate in the signing of a few agreements pertaining to shared concerns.

President Buhari will also visit the Portuguese Parliament and speak with Antonio Costa, the country’s prime minister, as well as its president, Dr. Augusto Santo Silva.

“The President is set to meet separately with a number of Portuguese Chief Executive Officers and potential investors to Nigeria as well as speak to a forum of Nigerian and Portuguese businessmen during his visit.

President Buhari will also take part in the UN Ocean Conference, which began on June 27 and will last until July 1 in Lisbon.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the Governments of Kenya and Portugal are co-hosting the conference, which aims to hasten the adoption of novel, science-based solutions to problems affecting oceans and the world marine ecosystem.

The leader of Nigeria is also anticipated to interact with the Nigerian population in Portugal about issues that concern them and developments back home.

Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture; Adeniyi Adebayo, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment; Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports; and Isa Pantami, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, will accompany the President.

Other members of his entourage include Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno (retired), Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Amb. Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar, and Honorable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

On Saturday, July 2, Buhari is anticipated to return to Nigeria.
