The administration of Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu State has handed the families of 33 abandoned corpses in the hospital’s morgue a 21-day ultimatum.
The school management claims that in the event that the evacuation order is ignored, the dead will be interred in a mass burial at the institution.
Prof. Christian Anieke, the vice chancellor of the university, announced at a news conference on Sunday in Enugu that the university has chosen to rebuild the morgue by November 13.
He disclosed that some of the remains had been at the mortuary for more than eighteen years.
According to Anieke, the improvements would make the mortuary appropriate for use as a teaching hospital.
He said, “We have got a court injunction to carry out mass burial of the 33 abandoned corpses in our teaching hospital morgue.
“Some of the corpses have been in the mortuary for more than 18 years and it is quite challenging as we want to renovate and make the hospital a befitting one for a teaching hospital.
“I am appealing to those who have corpses in the mortuary to come and remove them.
“We are talking about human beings here and not animals. Go and check if your relations are there.”
The head medical director of the teaching hospital, Prof. Cajetan Nwadinigwe, revealed that majority of the corpses found there had not been properly recognized.
Nwadinigwe stated in his address that 14 deceased people shared the same name.
Although he stated that there were no records of the dates the corpses were placed in the mortuary, it was clear that some of them had been there for more than ten years.
“This is our basis for approaching the court and advertising the warning in newspapers for families to see,’’ Nwadinigwe said.
