Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the Super Eagles, has given an explanation for why he did not alter his strategy while facing Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final.
According to Naija News, the Ivory Coast’s Elephants overcame Nigeria’s Super Eagles to win the 2023 AFCON in regulation time.
Nigeria and Ivory Coast faced off in the AFCON final, with William Troost-Ekong’s header giving Nigeria the early lead.
However, Franck Kessie’s header for Ivory Coast tied the score in the second half.
There were just a few minutes left in the game, and the host team won thanks to a goal from Sebastien Haller that was achieved by flicking the ball past Nigeria’s goalie Stanley Nwabali.
Following the game, Peseiro was questioned about the team’s defensive and pressure-absorbing tactics when leading by one goal.
He replied: “When you have a system that you have been using, and it has been working, you really don’t want to change it.
“It is true that I kept to this strategy until we were 2-1 down, and then I decided to change it.
“We conceded goals from some defensive errors, and they had a drop in level against the Ivorians.”
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) consoled Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali on Sunday night following Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final loss against Ivory Coast, which ended in a 2-1 loss.
When playing Ivory Coast, Nwabali did not manage to help Jose Peseiro’s team win despite an outstanding tournament performance.
