Lionel Messi, the great football player from Argentina and Inter Miami, has been awarded Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year.
Remember that in the summer of 2023, Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami, leaving Europe after dominating the football scene there from 2004 to 2023 while playing for FC Barcelona and subsequently Paris Saint-Germain?
The 36-year-old international player from Argentina has scored 11 goals in 14 games across all competitions since moving to Inter Miami in July of this year. Shortly after, Messi assisted the Major League Soccer (MLS) team in winning the League Cup, the team’s first major championship.
Messi became the first football player to win the Ballon d’Or eight times while playing outside of Europe when he won it in October of this year.
Following Messi’s 2023 selection as Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year, the publication asserted that Messi’s entry into the MLS had increased retail sales, viewership, ticket prices, and MLS game attendance.
The magazine added: “Lionel Messi this year managed to do what once seemed impossible when he signed with Inter Miami: turning the US into a soccer country”.
The United States Women’s National Soccer Team (2019), NBA player LeBron James (2020), gymnast Simone Biles (2021), and baseball player Aaron Judge (2022) are among the past winners of Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year award.
