
Professor Umaru Shehu, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, has passed away.
Northern Nigeria’s first professor of public health has passed away, according to a statement released on Monday by the Borno Elderly Forum and signed by its secretary, Dr. Bulama Gubio.
The Kanem Borno Historical and Cultural Foundation and the Borno Elderly Forum were both founded by Shehu, who passed away at the age of 97.
He was President of the Nigerian Academy of Sciences and Emeritus Professor of Public Health at the University of Maiduguri. Professor Shehu was born in Maiduguri, Nigeria on 8 December 1930. He attended Maiduguri Primary School from 1935 to 1940, Maiduguri Secondary School from 1941 to 1943, Kaduna College from 1944 to 1947, studied at Ibadan College from 1948 to 1953 and Liverpool Universities from 1953 to 1956 and from 1966 to 1967.
A graduate of the University of London, Professor Shehu holds a medical degree. In addition, he also holds the position of Editor-in-Chief of the British Medical Journal and has received a fellowship from the Institute of Cancer Research.
