Ned Nwoko has accused southern Nigerian males of contributing to prostitution by avoiding polygamy.
This was stated by the lawmaker, who is married to actress Regina Daniels, in a recent interview with The Guardian.
“Many women are out there on their own without husbands, particularly in the south of the country, and there is a high amount of prostitution,” he stated. What some of our females do to make ends meet is terrible, and if our men followed in the footsteps of their northern counterparts by having more than one wife, the situation could change.
“The average southerner may only have one wife, but he has numerous girlfriends, and he spends his money on them, often even more than on his wife.” A man with three wives, for example, focuses on them and his children; every penny he earns is spent on the family, and he is less likely to have girlfriends or concubines. The money spent on multiple women is a gift, not an investment in the family.”
Nwoko, who has several wives, went on to say that he and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, are serving Nigeria by marrying so many women.
“My grandfather, the Ooni’s grandfather, and the then Olowo of Owo shot many photographs together,” he explained. So the Ooni and I share that kind of history, because our grandfathers were both monarchs who served Nigeria in that manner. And we are now assisting Nigeria by having a large number of spouses.”
