An Ibadan-based trader named Tawakalitu Olayiwola requested a Mapo Grade A Customary Court on Wednesday to annul her 20-year marriage on the grounds of theft and assault.

Olayiwola said that she ended her marriage to Ganiu Olayiwola because her life was in danger as a result of her ongoing high blood pressure.

She said that since 2003, Ganiu had been hitting her without warning.

He even tried pouring acid on me, which is why I developed hypertension.

“Ganiu had never treated me with respect or been a good father to our three kids.

“My Lord, he typically provides N1,000 for six months’ worth of food allowance for the three children and me.

I worked extremely hard to maintain the home because of his carelessness, especially for the kids, but Ganiu wasn’t satisfied with me.

She claimed, “In reality, I stopped refusing him sexual contact because I used to be too exhausted to respond to his nighttime advances.

He declared me an adulterous as a result and turned on me.

Olayiwola went on to describe how her spouse had taken her television, cash, and cellphone.

“I had Ganiu taken into custody by the police, and he was questioned about taking some of my belongings, but he vehemently denied it.

“But, when we returned from the police station, I noticed the same cell phone he had claimed to have stolen.

She said, “Ganiu has turned into a detrimental influence on our first child because the latter now exhibits his bad temperament.

But, the respondent, who did not contest the lawsuit, acknowledged that he actually beats his wife for frequently coming home late at night.

“Tawakalitu was a recalcitrant wife despite my patience and three years of warnings.

Olayiwola is free, in fact, if she decides to break up her relationship with me, Ganiu stated.

Olayiwola and Ganiu never had a marriage that needed to be dissolved, according to the court’s president, Ms. S.M. Akintayo.

According to the evidence that was presented to the court, Akintayo noted, there was no legal customary marriage between them.

She granted the petitioner custody of the three children born to the union and mandated that the respondent assume responsibility for the children’s feeding, education, and medical care.

The president also issued an order prohibiting Ganiu from intimidating Olayiwola or harassing her in any way.
