The Union of Northern Groups (CNG) described the partition of the Senate presidency in the south of the country as an unfair act against the North.
Reports surfaced earlier in the 10th National Assembly leadership race that President-elect Bola Tinubu endorsed former Niger Delta Affairs Minister Godswill Akpabio against the wishes of the Senate President. institute, Ahmad Lawan.
Sources who spoke to the leadership about the outcome of a meeting between Tinubu and several party leaders at his residence in Abuja said Lawan had decided to block Akpabio’s ambitions to become Senate Speaker.
However, Tinubu is said to have been adamant with his choice to support Akpabio as President of the 10th Senate.
Advocate for zoning the position of Senate president in the North, CNG spokesman Abdul-Azeez Suleiman said the Northwest should be considered for the position of Senate spokesman because the president-elect, Tinubu, received the highest number of votes in the region.
Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, Suleiman said that since Tinubu is from the South, it would be unfair to zone the Senate headquarters in the same area.
“Ideally, and for the sake of fairness and balance, the entire South should not expect the presidency in the Senate to be the president-elect from there.
“I think we should consider the functions here logically. The vice president’s duties are nominal, which means North Korea may not be considered holding a functional position just because he has a vice president. Therefore, the next functional function after that of the president is the President of the Senate.
“In this case, since the South has the highest authority, the next authority, the president of the Senate, should legally stay in the North, assuming that makes any sense. Then it will go to the North to partition the position in the direction of Northwest or North Center.
A spokesman for the CNG argued that Northwest played a key role in the victory of the Progressive Congress (APC) candidate in the February 25 presidential election.
“Without a doubt, the Northwest is where the president-elect gets the majority of his winning votes, even outpacing his own region, the Southwest,” added Suleiman.
