The Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State was completely devastated by fire on Tuesday, reportedly destroying an undetermined quantity of products.

According to information acquired by Naija News, the fire broke out at the “Gbongboro” part of the market, where lace and other materials are sold.

Although the origin of the fire has not yet been determined, sources indicate that the warehouses, businesses, the police block, and the Onitsha North Local Government office were all damaged.

According to reports, merchandise worth millions of naira was destroyed by fire before firefighters could reach the area.

“The White House, which sells lace supplies, is where the fire originated. The area was intended to be a motor park and emergency escape, but due to the approval of some government organizations, people obstructed it with illegitimate structures, an eyewitness informed Daily Trust.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the State Police Command, acknowledged the occurrence but informed reporters that the specifics were still vague at the moment.

Nonetheless, he pointed out that the situation was being watched and that police and firefighters were there.

As of the time of publishing, the state fire department has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
