Veteran Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has called the Blues’ rumored bid to buy Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United a business deal.

It was initially declared that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes and new Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly met to discuss the prospect of luring the Portugal captain from Manchester United to Stamford Bridge.

Boehly wants to bring in a number of high-profile players during his first summer in charge of the West London club, and Chelsea has been connected to Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona and Raheem Sterling of Manchester City.

But Johnson thinks that if they were to get Ronaldo, who has won the Ballon d’Or five times, Boehly and his group would recover the money they spent on him in two weeks.

Johnson told GGRecon: “If he goes to Chelsea, he’ll burn his bridges at Manchester United.”

“From Chelsea’s standpoint, he’s a huge brand, and while he may be pricey, you’d definitely get that money back through shirt sales in two weeks. The club would definitely generate more money by simply having him even if he may cost a fortune. It’s similar to signing a business contract to sign Ronaldo.

“I don’t believe that Ronaldo can transform Chelsea’s current results as a player, but I do believe that his presence in the locker room may. Although he isn’t the Ronaldo we all want to see on the field right now, his presence in the locker room will increase productivity by 5%.
