“All beautiful things must come to an end,” Mikel Obi observed, “and today is that day for my professional football career.”

When I look back on the previous 20 years of my career, I must say that I am quite proud of what I have accomplished and, more importantly, the person I have helped shape.

“I couldn’t have done it without the unwavering support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, teammates, and, above all, my passionate fans.”

“You were there for me through my highs and lows, even when I didn’t meet your standards.” Thank you kindly.

“I’d also like to encourage anyone who I may have inspired in some way throughout my career to never give up on their dreams, because every time you consider quitting, remember why you started.”

“This is not the end, but the start of a new experience, a new chapter in my life.” I’m looking forward to what the future holds, and I hope you will join me. Thank you very much.”
