“The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral tonight evening and return to London tomorrow,” said a brief tweet.

Queen Elizabeth II is the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning monarch, having reigned for 70 years.

Her family met at her Scottish estate after health worries arose earlier in the day.

Since her accession to the throne in 1952, the Queen has witnessed an immense socioeconomic transformation.

Her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the kingdom in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms upon her death.

Crowds waiting for information on the Queen’s status at Buckingham Palace in London began crying as they learned of her death. At 18:30 BST, the Union flag above the palace was lowered to half-mast.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on April 21, 1926, in Mayfair, London.
